From a Chance Idea to the Nation’s Goldwing Trike Authority
2005
Our Story
KD Cycle began by chance in 2005 following a visit to Kevin Dodd’s Uncle Harold’s boat dealership in Rome, Georgia. Harold owned a well-established used boat dealership and had started building Honda Goldwing trikes on the side.
At the time, Kevin had spent several successful years as a Sales Representative with Cintas Uniform Company. After saving some money, he began looking for an opportunity to invest in.
While visiting Uncle Harold and his brother Kenny, who also worked at the dealership, he mentioned that he had some money saved and was looking for an investment opportunity. Harold’s response was simple: “Let’s build a trike.”
Harold already had a Roadsmith trike kit in stock and needed a Goldwing to complete the conversion. The following day, they traveled to Huntsville, Alabama, where Kevin purchased a 1993 Honda Goldwing. Harold completed the conversion, and just one week later, he called with the news that the trike had sold.
The profit was split, and that first successful sale sparked something much bigger.
2006 – 2011
Building a Business
KD Cycle was born, building a business around Goldwing trikes. Following that first trike sale, Kevin continued purchasing Goldwings for Harold to convert while also buying and selling used trikes. What began as a side venture quickly developed into a growing business.
In 2006, KD Cycle added the Motor Trike brand to its lineup. Kevin and brother Kenny began building and selling Motor Trike conversions, expanding the company’s experience and reach within the growing trike market.
As KD Cycle continued to grow, a longtime friend and former Sales Manager at Cintas became interested in the business. In 2009, the two partnered to add California Sidecar conversions to KD Cycle’s offerings.
By 2011, it had become clear that KD Cycle had the potential to become one of the largest Goldwing trike dealerships in the country. That year, Kevin made the decision to leave Cintas and focus entirely on building KD Cycle.
The same year brought several important changes. Kenny moved to Alabama and joined the company, and KD Cycle partnered with Roadsmith Trikes, beginning a relationship that would become an important part of the company’s future.
2012
The Evolution of KD Cycle
From a Backyard Garage to a 10,000+ Square-Foot Shop. In 2012, KD Cycle began building trikes in a garage located in Kevin’s backyard in Altoona, Alabama. That same year, Kevin brought his brother, Kerry, into the business, helping lay the foundation for KD Cycle’s continued growth. Even in those early days, the team was focused on providing customers with an exceptional experience. Through hard work, organization, and meticulous attention to detail, KD Cycle developed the ability to offer customers a one-day turnaround for Goldwing trike conversions.
As demand increased, KD Cycle continued expanding its inventory and capabilities.
2014 – 2019
Growing The Business
In 2014, the company added Hannigan trike conversions to its lineup. That same year, Kevin’s wife Michele joined the business and took over management of the office and titlework, becoming an important part of KD Cycle’s continued growth.
In 2015, KD Cycle built its current facility. As the company continued to expand, the shop was eventually enlarged to more than 10,000 square feet in 2019, providing the space necessary to accommodate its growing inventory, team, and customer base.
2015 – current
Choosing Roadsmith Trikes
In 2015, KD Cycle made the decision to partner exclusively with Roadsmith Trikes. After completing hundreds of trike conversions and working with multiple manufacturers, KD Cycle had the experience necessary to recognize the difference in quality. The company determined that Roadsmith’s craftsmanship, engineering, and overall quality were unmatched.
